Roger Fry was born on December 14,1866 in London. He studied at Clifton College in Bristol and then at the University of Cambridge where he specialised in natural sciences. He then went on to visit France and Italy where he began to paint landscapes. This was followed by portraits and self-portraits. In the 1900s, Fry began teaching art history at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. In 1906, he moved to the United States for four years to work as curator of the Paintings Department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. On his return to London, in 1910 and 1912 he organised two exhibitions on the post-impressionists (a term of which he was the author). Roger Fry died on September 9, 1934 in London.

Roger Fry was an English painter and art critic of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His famous works are "Lady with a Monkey", "The Place of Aumole" and "Portrait of Edith Sitwell".

Roger Fry was particularly associated with Edouard Manet, Jean Marchand and Egon Shiele.
