Wanderer above the sea of fog

The Traveller Contemplating a Sea of Clouds, also known as The Traveller above the Sea of Clouds or Man Contemplating a Sea of Mist (in German: Der Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer) is a painting by the German Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich. It was composed from 1818 onwards and, along with The Sea of Ice, is one of the painter's most famous works. It is preserved and exhibited at the Kunsthalle in Hamburg. This work belongs to the German Romantic movement. In the foreground, a man is standing on a high rock, his back to the viewer. He is wearing a dark green frock coat and is holding a walking stick in his right hand. His hair is blowing in the wind as he contemplates a misty landscape. In an intermediate shot, mountain ridges appear in front of him, which could be like the one he is standing on. Trees can be discerned in the wisps of mist. In the distance, blurred mountains rise to the left. The fog in the background extends to the point where the horizon and the cloudy sky are indistinct. The work is characteristic of the Romantic period, and more particularly of Friedrich's style, as are other of his works such as Chalk Cliffs on the Island of Rügen and The Sea of Ice. It has given rise to numerous comments and interpretations. The landscape depicted is inspired by the Elbe sandstone massif, with Zirkelstein (de) in the background on the right; the mountain in the background on the left may be Mount Rosenberg or Mount Kaltenberg.

This artwork is a painting from the classical period. It belongs to the romanticism style.
