Valley of the Shadow of Death

Roger Fenton was commissioned by the Manchester publisher Thomas Agnew & Sons to travel to the Crimea and document the war (1853-1856). This mission was encouraged by the government so Fenton took 360 photographs for Queen Victoria, his sovereign. These shots mark an important step in the evolution of war report. The Valley of Death is part of this series : we can see a desolated ravine with scattered cannonballs. This place was baptized with this name by the soldiers of the British army after it was defeated by the Russian at this precise place. Fenton didn’t capture the fights or the dead, but rather a sentiment of desolation that is well-suited to this barren land which aridity is reinforced by the sepia and brown undertones.

This artwork is a photography from the beginnings period. It belongs to the landscape photography styles and photojournalism styles.

« Valley of the Shadow of Death » is kept at Private Collection.
