The Two Fridas is a painting by the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, painted in 1939. It was shortly after her divorce from Diego Rivera that Frida Kahlo painted this self-portrait depicting two different personalities. The figure on the right represents the person Diego Rivera loved, a "Frida" in Mexican costume. In her hand she holds a portrait of Diego Rivera. The 'Frida' on the left is more European in style, wearing a white lace dress and representing the Frida that Diego no longer loved. The hearts of the two women are exposed, a technique that Frida Kahlo often used to express her pain. The heart of the "unloved" Frida is broken, while the other is whole. From the amulet held by the Frida on the right, a vein running through both women's hearts is finally cut by a pair of scissors held by the rejected Frida. In desperation, she tries to stop the flow of Diego's blood, which continues to drip. The stormy, cloud-filled sky may reflect Frida Kahlo's inner turmoil. Frida fell into a deep depression when she learned that her husband was developing a carnal relationship with her younger sister, whom he used as a model. A child was born of this union. Frida experiences this relationship as a betrayal. "In her despair, Frida decided to cut off her long black hair that her husband loved so much"; she also adopted a grey uniform that contrasted with the large flowery dresses she had worn until then. She sent her self-portraits to Diego to tell him that from now on she would be ugly [...]
