The Little Street

The Lane (in Dutch: Het Straatje) is a 54.3 × 44 cm oil painting on canvas by Johannes Vermeer, painted around 1658 and exhibited in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. It depicts, from a frontal perspective, a relatively small section of a typical Delft alley, with a facade on the right that takes up more than half the frame. Signed 'I-VMeer' on the white wall below the window in the lower left-hand corner of the canvas, the painting is, along with the View of Delft, one of only two surviving outdoor paintings by Vermeer. Identifying the precise location depicted by Vermeer has given rise to numerous hypotheses. While the painting does depict a lane and houses characteristic of Delft, the painter's birthplace, their location continues to be debated among local topographers: the Oude Langendijk, the Nieuwe Langendijk, the Trompetstraat, the Spieringstraat, the Achterom, the Vlamingstraat and the Voldersgracht have all been suggested. For a long time, the idea was that this was a view of a house on the Voldersgracht that was about to be demolished, taken from behind the "Mechelen", the inn on the Market Square where Vermeer had lived. However, it has been proven that the painter left the family inn in the mid-1650s, and a more recent hypothesis places this view in the Nieuwe Langendijk, next to the canal where Vermeer was actually living at the time.
