St Catherines Lock

La Sainte Catherine is a group of sculpted subjects by Julien Lorieux, located in Square Montholon (9th arrondissement, Paris). The sculpted group depicts five catherinettes in tailored suits and hats with ribbons made for the occasion and orange blossom buds, on their way to the Sainte Catherine ball on 25 November. The base bears the following inscription: " The work evokes the tradition of young unmarried women over the age of 25 (catherinettes) wearing hats on Saint Catherine's Day (25 November). As 'late' celibacy mainly affected people of modest means, this festival became a sort of corporate holiday for dressmakers and milliners. The festivities began in women's workplaces (novelty shops, dressmakers' workshops, etc.), then spilled out into the street to end at the ball (the last chance for catherinettes to get married)". The statue pays tribute to the working-class women of the Montholon district. The statue was created in 1908, purchased by the Paris City Council in 1913 and installed in 1925 in Montholon Square, which had been laid out between 1862 and 1863 under the direction of Adolphe Alphand.
