;" Curtain, Cruchon and Compotier is an oil on canvas by the French painter Paul Cézanne (1839-1906), painted between 1893 and 1894. It is considered to be the most expensive still life ever sold at auction; Cézanne is famous for painting still lifes that express complex emotions while being based on the careful observation of reality. His painting also allowed a certain transition towards cubism. This painting was first owned by the famous Parisian gallery owner Ambroise Vollard, then by the Dutch collector Cornelis Hoogendijk, who sold it to the gallery owner Paul Rosenberg. Then the billionaire Albert C. Barnes bought it before selling it to the gallery owner Carroll Carstairs. The painting was sold at Sotheby's in New York on 10 May 1999 for the record sum of 60,502,500 dollars, during the sale of the collection of John Hay Whitney (1904-1982) by his heirs.
