Bonaparte au pont d'Arcole (17 novembre 1796)
Bonaparte at the Pont d'Arcole is a painting by Gros, depicting an episode from the Battle of the Pont d'Arcole. General Bonaparte leads his troops in an assault on the Pont d'Arcole. The painting places the General-in-Chief of the French army squarely in the iconographic legend of the Italian campaign.

The words "Bonaparte, Armée d'Italie" are inscribed on the blade. The background, which suggests an exterior environment, shows a sky laden with clouds of smoke on the left, where a few houses can also be seen. The ground beside the river is painted in a dark tint, and we can see a cannonball still smoking.
Gros's painting depicts the supposed crossing of the Pont d'Arcole by Generals Augereau and Bonaparte, although they never actually crossed it. On 15 November 1796, Augereau was stopped by heavy fire in front of the Pont d'Arcole. This failure prompted Bonaparte to seize the flag from an ensign-bearer of a battalion of the 99th demi-brigade and advance on foot to the middle of the bridge, [...]
