Annunciation of Cortona

The Annunciation of Cortona is a work by Fra Angelico, held in the Diocesan Museum of Cortona. The Annunciation of Cortona was painted by Fra Angelico in 1433-1434, in tempera on a panel measuring 175 cm × 180 cm. It is one of three Annunciations by Fra Angelico on canvas: the other two are the one in the Prado Museum in Madrid and the one in San Giovanni Valdarno. Two others, but painted in fresco, are in the convent of San Marco in Florence, one at the top of the entrance staircase and another in the third cell. There are also scenes of the theme combined with an Adoration of the Magi in the San Marco Museum, and on a diptych in the National Gallery of Umbria in Perugia. Intended for the faithful and not just the Dominicans of the Florentine convent of San Marco, the image uses all the prestige of colour and precious materials. A typical scene in Christian iconography, The Annunciation to Mary by the Archangel Gabriel is described in the Gospels and in great detail in Jacques de Voragine's The Golden Legend, the standard work of reference for Renaissance painters, which allows it to be depicted in all its symbolism (walled garden, column, presence of the Holy Spirit, evocation of Adam and Eve driven from Paradise). This painting is the main panel of a polyptych.
